Description

The bull is the official symbol of the city of Turin.

More than 2000 years ago, on the road to France, the roman army founded a small camp and called it Augusta Julia Taurinorum. This name symbolically joined emperor Julius Caesar Augustus with the people originally living in that area, Taurini (so called because of their vast bovine herds, or their attitude at fighting fiercely). So, in the end, the name Torino comes from "taurus", that is "bull" in latin.

This shot was taken in Piazza Castello, also known as Medals Plaza during 2006 Winter Olympics. The bull head in the foreground is actually a fret of a light pole; on the background, the wonderful dome of San Lorenzo's church (St. Lawrence), built by the famous architect Guarino Guarini in 1668.
