I will not engage a discussion about what art is, or should be, or has been. This world is full of dictionaries and encyclopedias, and i am sure that anybody out there has its own opinion on the subject. Please read on to discover what the title of this journal actually means.
During the last weekend, Turin hosted a contemporary art exhibition, called Artissima. The name, a non-existent italian word (the absolute superlative of a substantive), shows some originality in itself.
Artissima gave a chance to young and unknown creative minds from all over the world to expose their creations beside the pieces of popular artists: this is, per se, one of its most interesting aspects, imho. Plus, the exhibition was full of capturing pieces: some photography, some painting, and a number of more or less appealing installations.
Among these, i loved a strange (and big!) structure made of a multi-windowed frame, where each window had a different size and was occupied by a metal panel: a set of automated hammers hit the panels, creating sounds that remembered bells. Sorry, I don't remember the name of the piece and its author (he was italian, however), but i can definitely say that I would be happy to have it in my living room, acting as a musical wall.
As a side note, I don't know whether my neighbors would share my pleasure, though. Maybe I could enjoy a scaled-down model anyway.
Connected to Artissima, another nice exhibition happened in Turin. The streets of a central quarter of the city, San Salvario, became a space where artists could expose their pieces, trying to integrate them with the place and the life flowing in it. It was called Paratissima, from "Para", the name of a movement gathering "para-artists" of many different extractions.
Now, I'm coming to the point. One of the Para-pieces, was the "Pink Shit", boldly showing multiple occurrences of itself along a sidewalk.

I don't know what the idea took its origin from. I suppose (only suppose) it came from a very very old joke: when I was a child, I learned from my mum that if someone doesn't understand what you're saying and asks "Cosa?" (What?), you can brilliantly answer "Una merda rosa!" (A pink shit!): in italian, the question and answer compose a rhyme; I can understand that most of the thrill is lost in the english translation.
Well, I am sure that now you, really all of you, just can't wait to see how art can be a pink shit, or maybe how a pink shit can be art, it doesn't matter: we can consider the question from multiple sides; each of us will find their own answer.
So, here it is, the Pink Shit!
