A panorama view of S. Carlo Square, Turin, decorated with the suggestive "The kingdom of flowers" (Il regno dei fiori) light installation by Nicola De Maria. For a closeup of a "flower", please see Turin - 17; for more information about the square, see Turin - 16.

In the middle of the square, the photographs of an open air photo exhibition are visible with some detail.

This panorama image is made up of eight poses (taken in "portrait" orientation). For each pose, five shots were taken, each at a different exposure. Each series of five shots was postprocessed both in HDR (High Dynamic Range) and DRI (Dynamic Range Increment) mode, thus obtaining two distinct images. The HDR and DRI images from each series were then merged: this allowed to get a single picture for each series, holding the maximum light dynamic range without losing the natural feeling of colors and contrast. Finally, the eight resulting images were stitched together in order to obtain the complete view of the square: it covers a visual angle of about 200 degrees. :phew:

The original panorama image is about 14,000 x 2,400 px and shows an interesting amount of details. For example, the subjects of the photographs in the square are clearly visible and you can almost count the lamps of a Christmas light that surrounds the door and windows of a store under the portico, behind the rightmost photographs.

Full view recommended. Thanks for viewing.

Eighteenth image in my "Turin" series. Please see the complete series.

Winner of *Shutter-Vision's Night photography contest, dec. '08 - jan '09.

People's opinions are just that, opinions, make sure your opinion is the one you take the most heed of.

Ma sei italiano? se è così, sarà meglio scriversi in italiano, così evito di dover tradurre ogni volta!

it was not so late... look at the digiclock on the top of the building on the right, it was about half past midnight. when i got there at about midnight i was quite sure i would have to wait for people to go back home, but when i saw the place was almost desert already i immediately started my work to take the shots. nonetheless, completing the series took more than 45 minutes, since i often had to wait for small groups of passing people to get out of the camera's viewfinder.
we call this square our "living room"... it is always crowded. i think the reason why there was nobody around is that so many people had just spent their sunday in stores and shop centers to buy xmas gifts and they were at home, giving their aching feet some deserved rest. :)

and no, that's not my bike, it's just a scooter. my bike is a real motorbike! ;)

thank you - for the :+fav: also.

i run a linux box... no "winzozz" on my pc! :D
so for the hdr processing i used psftools from sourceforge.net [link] with a gui i downloaded from [link]

for the dri processing i used the gimp [link]

for the panorama stitching i used autostitch [link] - i wrote a tutorial about this nifty tool, look at [link] if you're interested.

ps. si sono italiano ma nei messaggi pubblici preferisco scrivere in inglese, cosi' possono essere letti da piu' persone. se ti fa piacere possiamo discorrere in italiano tramite note.

Yeah! Another one free-software user!
I use Linux too!
I'll try to use the packages that you told me, maybe I could make something good.
Yet I use gimp for some colors adjustment, saturation and other little things like that... I start to use it less than one month ago, so my works with gimp are quite simple. I hope I'm learning something more in a while.
See Ya!
