Le Mont-Saint-Michel is a very unique place in the world, just like Venice and a few more.
It is highly suggestive by day, kudos to its powerful and daring structure; plus, it is surrounded by a long shore when the tide is low and becomes an island when the ocean reaches the high tide. At night, the wonderful lighting really leaves the visitor without words: it feels like being into a dream and in the real world at the same time. On the tech side, the light dynamic was too wide for any sensor or film. So I took five exposures, bracketed from -2EV to +2EV, and one more "mean exposure" shot, I extracted two exposures from. The five bracketed exposures were merged into a HDR image that I tonemapped twice: the first time I exaggerated the lights. This enhanced the colors of the sky and saved some detail in the shore areas and in some of the darkest spots of the rooftops. The second tonemapped image was aimed to preserve the color tones and the correct amount of light in the lightest areas. The two exposures extracted from the sixth shot were merged into a DRI image, that showed some underexposed and overexposed spots, along with a somehow flat contrast. The three resulting images were finally merged together, masking each image as needed to have realistic colors, good contrast and the correct exposure for the white spots in the abbey, while preserving details even in the darkest areas. unforgettable picture! looks like a dream with all those colors...
i was wondering how you achieved such an effect and then read the detailed explanation: thank you so much for this. really useful. and thanks for this beauty - makes me wanna go there immediately -- member of :=TreesClub yeah
the most amazing about it - it doesn't remotely remind hdr or anything! just a wonder -- member of :=TreesClub the blending of several hdr and dri renderings helps in avoiding unnatural colors, but allows the widest light dynamic range possible. the result is very realistic, but believe me, the image cannot return but a small fraction of the emotion the real view offers.
thak you again for your appreciation -- Don't take life too seriously. It's not permanent. |
